Suicide risk is complex and can involve differences in thinking, emotion, and decision-making, and often co-occurs with conditions such as depression, anxiety, substance use, or psychosis. Risk can be shaped by both long-term factors (e.g., early experiences) and immediate stressors (e.g., loss or violence). Many people have risk factors but do not attempt suicide—early identification and effective treatment save lives. (Source: NIMH)
Key Points
- Depression is a major risk factor; it’s also highly treatable for most people.
- Early detection, diagnosis, and strong treatment for mental health and substance use conditions are protective.
- Know warning signs and act—support, connect to care, and follow up. (See NIMH warning signs.)
