Apple Orchard
Our Orchard: A Living Learning LabWe have an Orchard! 🌳 In 2018, 60 apple trees were generously donated to Holmen’s Nutrition Services Department — planting the seeds of a growing legacy. Located near Viking Elementary on the highest point of the old cross-country course, this orchard has become much more than a collection of trees. It serves as a true outdoor learning lab for students in the Agriscience Academy, giving them hands-on experience in growing, harvesting, and understanding local food systems. In Spring 2023, the orchard was officially named the Dave Shefelbine School District of Holmen Learning Orchard — honoring the dedication of Dave and his passion for agricultural education. In Fall 2023, fifth-grade students who helped plant the apple trees years prior joined again to harvest the fruit — closing the learning loop in the most delicious way possible. Those apples are now served fresh in our Holmen lunchrooms, connecting students directly to the fruits of their labor. The orchard’s success is thanks to collaboration among FFA members from the Agriscience Department, and the dedicated leadership of Roger King, Michael Gasper, and orchard specialist Dave Shefelbine.
