Farm to School: “Winner Winner Chicken Dinner” 🐔

Holmen FFA brought school-raised chickens to the lunch menu — a major milestone for our Farm to School Program that connects agriculture, education, and nutrition.

For four years, Holmen’s FFA students carefully raised chickens as part of a special grant-funded project within the Farm to School initiative. On January 30, 2015, their dedication paid off when the first school-raised chicken meal was served across the district — nearly 3,000 servings of baked chicken in one day.

“It wasn’t just school lunch or just a classroom — it really got a number of kids involved. It touched every kid in this district and was also an opportunity for us in Nutrition Services to get involved in the education process.”
— Michael Gasper, Nutrition Services Supervisor

Since that first “Winner Winner Chicken Dinner,” the FFA program has expanded Holmen’s homegrown offerings. Students have cultivated sweet corn, potatoes, lettuce, asparagus, squash, and most recently, pork and beef for use in school meals — continuing the mission to grow local, eat local, and learn local.
