What Makes a Meal

What every lunch must offer

  • Five food items
  • From the five components shown below
  • At least the minimum serving sizes for the grade group
  • Students must take at least 3 of the 5 components, and one choice must be a fruit or vegetable

The five food components

Meat / Meat Alternate
Protein foods such as lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, cheese, yogurt, or eggs.
Vegetables
One or more servings of different kinds of vegetables.
Fruits
One or more servings of different fruits.
Grains / Breads
Primarily whole-grain options that meet USDA standards.
Milk
Fat-free or low-fat milk options.

At the School District of Holmen, you may

  • Double your vegetable/fruit choice
  • Substitute one container of 100% juice for a fresh fruit choice per meal
  • Count items from the salad bar toward the vegetable/fruit component

Tip: To qualify as a reimbursable meal under Offer Versus Serve (OVS), students should choose at least three components — and make sure one selection is a fruit or vegetable.
