Assistive Technology (AT)
Tools and services that help students access learning and demonstrate what they know.
The School District of Holmen provides a wide array of Assistive Technology tools and devices to support students who need this service. Assistive Technology is defined as any item, piece of equipment, or product system—whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized—that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of children with disabilities (Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004).
Communication & Writing
- Speech-to-text and word prediction
- Alternate keyboards, keyguards, or input methods
- Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) apps/devices
Reading & Access to Text
- Text-to-speech and screen readers
- Accessible digital books and audio supports
- Annotation and study-skill tools
Organization & Executive Function
- Visual schedules, timers, and task-management apps
- Note-taking and planning tools
- Reminders and focus aids
Physical Access & Mobility
- Switches, mounts, and alternative pointers
- Seating/positioning supports to access instruction
- Environmental controls for classroom participation
How AT Is Considered
- Team Discussion: The IEP/504 team reviews student needs and tasks in typical settings.
- Trial & Data: Potential tools are tried in authentic tasks; the team collects data.
- Decision & Plan: If effective, services/devices are documented in the IEP/504 plan.
- Training & Follow-Up: Staff, student, and family receive training and ongoing support.
