Open Enrollment
District School Choice (Open Enrollment)
Wisconsin’s inter-district public school open enrollment program allows families to apply for their children to attend a public school district other than the one in which they live (a nonresident district).
Who may apply
- Students in 5-year-old Kindergarten through Grade 12.
- Pre-K / Early Childhood / 4K:
- Only if the resident district offers the same type of program, and
- Only if the child is eligible for that program in the resident district.
How it works
- Submit an application to the nonresident district during the regular application window (see DPI for this year’s dates).
- Complete a separate application for each child.
- You may request a specific school or program; assignment is not guaranteed.
- Families may apply to up to three nonresident districts per school year.
- Miss the regular window? DPI’s alternative application period typically begins July 1; see DPI for eligibility and timelines.
