Safety & Capacity Guidelines

Due to high ridership and our commitment to student safety, each student must ride only their assigned bus and to one designated location. This policy reduces confusion and ensures students arrive safely.

We cannot accommodate students riding for sleepovers, birthday parties, or similar events. Additionally, glass items (such as flower vases) and balloons are not permitted on buses for safety reasons.

“A Consistent Ride Is a Safe Ride.”
Choose one morning pickup and one afternoon drop-off location. Consistency ensures your child’s safety and helps us maintain accurate records. If your schedule varies, please arrange personal pickup or drop-off for those days.

Students should not ride unassigned buses, including for after-school activities such as scouts or parties. When bus assignments are followed, our youngest students are safest — reducing incidents of confusion or missed stops. If schedule changes are required, please pick up your child directly from school or daycare.

Changes in School Transportation Service

Each year, adjustments to routes and bus stops occur to increase efficiency. Some students may need to walk farther to reach stops. These changes help reduce costs and improve service.

Transportation Director Dan Garrett considers several factors when adjusting routes, including distance, student age, safe walking routes, and stop capacity. Enrollment increases can also affect routes and timing. Only principals may issue emergency bus passes to ride a different bus. During COVID restrictions, no temporary passes were permitted.

The district continues to monitor energy costs and participates in the Safe Routes to School Grant to support community efforts in creating safe walking options.

Daily Transportation

Transportation is provided between all district locations and schools based on school boundary assignments. Bus route details, including pickup/drop-off times, stop locations, and driver names, are available in the Infinite Campus Portal → Transportation Tab.

Times are estimates and may change as ridership adjusts. Please have students ready 5–10 minutes before their scheduled pickup time.

If you move or register mid-year and do not receive route information, contact the Transportation Office at 608-526-4752.

Daycare Transportation

The district provides limited transportation for students needing alternate caregiver locations before or after school, provided these locations are within the same school attendance boundary and meet specific criteria:

  • The caregiver is on an existing route serving the student’s school.
  • No transfer or shuttle between buses is required.
  • No additional cost is incurred by the district.
  • The bus must have capacity without displacing assigned riders.

Pickup and drop-off locations must be the same each day (morning and afternoon may differ). When planning childcare arrangements, please verify transportation availability in advance. Submit requests early to allow for processing.

Home Address Information

Keep your address information current. If changes occur within two weeks before school starts, transportation adjustments may take up to five days. Families may need to provide transportation until updates are processed.

Location of Bus Stops

Students are grouped at designated bus stops, usually at corners or nearby safe locations. Not all stops can be visible from homes. Parents are encouraged to accompany young children. Students should arrive at least five minutes before scheduled pickup. Buses cannot wait for students coming from inside homes.

Elementary students receive an ID bracelet identifying their bus and stop. Please have your child wear it for at least the first two weeks of school.

Private School Transportation

Transportation is provided for students residing within the School District of Holmen boundaries attending St. Patrick’s, St. Paul’s, Great River Montessori, and Luther High School in Onalaska.

Half-day 4K students are offered transportation one way (AM or PM). Parents transporting at noon may qualify for partial reimbursement. Full-day 4K students receive round-trip service and are not eligible for reimbursement.

Requests for private school transportation must be submitted by May of the current school year for service in the upcoming year.
