Parent Guide to Standard Response Protocol

Why This Matters

The Standard Response Protocol gives schools and first responders a common language during emergencies. Instead of using general or inconsistent terms, each response is tied to a specific action so everyone understands what is happening and what to do next.

That consistency matters. Students hear the same terms from year to year. Staff members train using the same framework. First responders know what actions are underway. Families can better understand official updates and the level of response being used.

At the School District of Holmen, we believe clear language supports a calm, coordinated, and effective response during safety situations.

For Families

  • Learn the difference between Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, Hold, and Shelter.
  • Watch for official communication from the district during safety situations.
  • Do not rely on rumors or social media speculation during an incident.
  • Following district instructions helps keep school responses orderly, accurate, and safe.

How We Communicate With Families

During a safety event, families should watch for official updates through district communication channels. Information may be shared by email, text message, the School District of Holmen website, and the district’s official social media channels. These channels are the best source for confirmed and timely information.

Please remember: In a developing situation, information may change quickly. Waiting for official communication helps reduce confusion and supports an orderly response.
