What data is used to determine if my student would benefit from Reading Intervention at HMS?
Classroom Performance
Students are often referred by the student's ELA teacher because they are struggling with classroom work and assessments. Students who are provided tutoring support during Academy time and are not responding well to the additional support often need more intensive reading help.
STAR Assessment
Three times a year, we STAR test students to measure academic performance in both ELA and Math against students across the country. The STAR assessment is a predictive measure to how well students will preform on the Wisconsin Forward Assessment taken each spring. The STAR assessment has benchmarks for each time we assess. Student who score Below Basic or Basic lack skills and strategies of independent and strategic readers.
Running Records
A Running Record is an assessment tool that is conducted one on one and measures a student's reading fluency, accuracy and comprehension. There are text level benchmarks for each grade level. Students at grade level are able to demonstrate the reading behaviors of those levels and are independent and strategic readers. They are also able to summarize stories, infer, and recognize the author's craft in a text.
