Calming Strategies

Everyone at one time or another has felt out of control emotionally. It can be tough to manage our feelings in times of uncertainty. Taking the time to recognize and cope with these feelings supports both overall mental and physical wellness for children and adults. Below are different strategies that everyone in the family can use to regulate emotions and keep those yucky out of control feelings from taking over. If you would like to talk more specifically for your child, please contact me via e-mail for other strategies. 

 

Helping Kids who are Worried About the Coronavirus

An article that offers practical strategies and some resources to help littles with their big feelings and worries. 

Mindful Monday Videos

Follow the Viking PBIS Youtube Channel. Each Monday throughout the year I have posted a mindfulness practice video. Students are familiar with these and can use them to practice calming strategies at home just like at school. I will continue to add as time goes on. 

Cosmic Kids Yoga

Looking for some movement that also helps your child release stress? Comic kids is a great website that allows your children to practice yoga and calm their bodies in a fun and engaging manner. 

100 Coping Strategies

Everyone copes with big feelings differently. What works for you doesn't always work for someone else. Explore this list of coping strategies. Identify which of these help your body regulate and feel calm. 

Coping through Coloring

Coloring is a great way to reduce stress, refocus the mind, and process big emotions. The calming effects it has on your body can be useful for pure relaxation to helping children open up and talk about what really bothers them. These coloring pages have inspirational quotes. Have your student pick one that they like best and describe what it means to them. ***Better for 2nd-5th and adults

Positive Affirmation Mazes

Positive affirmations are a great way for students to boost their self-esteem as well as remind them to find the good even in tough situations. Add in some mindfulness and focus to solve a maze and you have a sure fire way to calm even an anxious kiddo.
