Chromebook FAQs

What is a Chromebook?

A Chromebook is like a laptop but instead of having Windows or iOS operating systems, Chromebooks run off Google Chrome. Through Chrome, students can type documents, use spreadsheets, create presentations and more. They can access all of their work from any computer that connects to the internet.

Do you need Internet access to use a Chromebook?

Some offline functions are able to be used with a Chromebook, but it works the best if you have a WiFi signal.

Do Chromebooks come with Internet Filtering Software?

No. Chromebooks do not come with Internet filtering software. However, while in district, Chromebooks will use the School’s WIFI to access the internet which is filtered. While at home, the Chromebooks will be filtered using any protection provided by the home WiFi system, if applicable.

Do Chromebooks need virus protection?

Because of how Chromebooks are designed, no virus protection is needed.

What is the expected battery life?

Chromebooks have a rated battery life of approxiametly 13 hours. However, we do expect that students charge them each evening to ensure maximum performance during the school day. Battery life may also be affected by the age of the Chromebook.

Can I opt my student out of receiving a Chromebook?

Students cannot opt out of a District issued Chromebook.

Is there an option to buy the Chromebook?

Only graduating seniors have the option to buy their Chromebook.

What if I don’t want my student to bring their Chromebook home?

Students should take their Chromebook home every night to complete assigned work. They also must ensure that their Chromebook is charged every night so it is ready to use the next day. Please contact building administration to make other arrangements.

Will students be allowed to take their Chromebooks home over the summer?

Middle school Chromebooks will be collected during the last two weeks of the school year and are not allowed to be taken home over the summer. Any middle school students attending summer school will have access to their Chromebooks once classes begin.

High school students will be allowed to take their devices home over the summer.

Can students use personal accounts on their Chromebooks?

Students will not be allowed to use personal accounts on their devices. Students should only be accessing their District accounts on their District issued Chromebook.
